Choosing a Yoga Bag

Yoga bags are sold empty or in kits with a mat and a few props. A bag is useful when practicing yoga in a studio or at the gym. However, don't buy the bag first. Purchase your mat and other equipment and then you will be able to determine the size and type of bag that will work best for you.

If you use props in your practice, a yoga bag is an essential piece of equipment. For example, Hatha yoga uses straps, blocks and other props. A good bag is needed to carry the supplies to the studio and is nice for storing your equipment at home and keeping everything organized.

A variety of fabrics are used in yoga bags. A washable bag is easier to clean. This is particularly important if you take a hot yoga class and carry sweaty towels and clothes. Even if you just carry a mat and a few props, you'll want to be able to wash it, sooner or later.

Many ecologically conscious yoga students select yoga mats and supplies that are made with natural materials. Natural cotton and other fabrics are not only environmentally responsible, they are a healthier choice.

Be sure to choose a bag with enough space for what you typically carry to class. The bag should be large enough to fit your yoga mat, as well as any yoga towels, props and small blankets or bolsters you will be bringing to class. If you use a meditation cushion, blanket or bolster in your practice, a large enough bag will carry everything you need.

Room for a small purse or pockets for keys, cell phones or wallets is important if you only want to carry one bag. Many yoga bags have pockets of different sizes to fit keys, glasses, water bottles and other personal items, so you don't need a pocketbook.

Some studios carry yoga bags, but the supplies sold at the local studio are expensive. Search online to find good deals on quality yoga bags and props. Sites like Amazon that has user reviews and detailed product descriptions are helpful for choosing the right size bag for your needs.
